On Saturday, 15 August 2026, the Piazza at In Shere Lifestyle Centre became a meeting point for young talent from the German International School Pretoria (DSP) and internationally experienced musicians. The DSP hosted CubanXCrossover – Special Edition “Legends”, bringing an afternoon of music, cultural diversity and inspiring encounters to the audience.

The free open-air concert opened with performances by the DSP’s Marimba Ensembles, Choirs and Wind Ensemble. The young musicians showcased the diversity and quality of the school’s music programme and set the tone for an engaging afternoon of live music.

The ensembles were directed by Kiewiet Pali, Surette Prinsloo and Rainer von Schlichting. They were followed on stage by CubanXCrossover, featuring Cuban bassist, guitarist and composer Alfredo Hechavarria and German-Argentinian singer Clarissa. The duo captivated the audience with a programme that brought together musical icons and a range of different styles.

Contemporary Latin arrangements, enriched with elements of jazz, swing and improvisation, created a vibrant musical bridge between cultures and generations.The Hechavarria couple was joined by acclaimed South African musicians Thendo Mokgola on piano and Sphiwe Shiburi on drums.

For DSP Principal Manuel Haß, the concert was a special opportunity to showcase the school’s young musicians to a wider audience while giving them the chance to engage with professional artists in an international musical environment.

“We are very proud to give our learners the opportunity to perform in front of a wider audience and to experience the inspiration that comes from being part of a professional concert alongside international artists. These experiences build confidence, broaden horizons and show our learners what is possible when they develop their talents.”

Mr Haß also emphasised the importance of music as part of the holistic education offered at DSP:

“At the German School Pretoria, we want our learners to discover and develop their individual talents. Our music programme gives them opportunities not only to learn, but also to perform, collaborate and gain valuable real-world experience. Sharing a stage with internationally experienced musicians is a particularly valuable part of that journey.”

The concert also reflected the DSP’s broader commitment to connecting education with cultural experiences and opportunities beyond the classroom. For the school’s young musicians, it was a memorable opportunity to share their passion for music with a wider audience and perform alongside internationally experienced artists.
